‍February Special Events

 

‍We have made it to February and hopefully spring weather is not too far off. The number of special events in the community is increasing this month,  and there is a lot of interest and planning surrounding the Eclipse that will occur in April. We hope you and your family are able to attend some or all of these Washington County events. 

Movie Showing at The Depot - Feb 3

You're invited to the first of three eclipse themed movies to celebrate the upcoming Solar Eclipse to be held at The Depot on the grounds of the John Hay Center.The film showing is free to the public, however donations are appreciated. The film is set to start at 7:00pm.

 

Based on the novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) by Mark Twain, the film is about a mechanic in 1912 who bumps his head and finds himself in Arthurian Britain in AD 528, where he is befriended by a knight and gains power by judicious use of technology.

 

Prior knowledge of an eclipse allows the protagonist to strike fear in his captors.

 

This classic musical comedy stars Bing Crosby and Rhonda Fleming. 

‍Solar Eclipse Meeting for Business/Community Leaders - February 8th

‍The City of Salem would like to invite local businesses, public officials and community organizations to an informative meeting regarding the 2024 Solar Eclipse which will take place on Monday, April 8. As a community located in the totality of the eclipse, we anticipate visitors to the area over the weekend leading up to Monday’s eclipse.  Please join us on Thursday, February 8 at 10 a.m. at City Hall in the Council Chambers to learn more about public safety efforts, lodging, traffic flow, parking and more.

‍Free Family Bingo Night - Feb 9th

‍Get the family together for an evening of bingo on February 9th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm for a fun Substance Free Alternative Event!

 

This event will be held at the Campbellsburg Community Building located at 125 S. Sycamore Street in Campbellsburg. Free admission and open to the public. No cash prizes. 

Lunch & Learn - Black History in Washington County - Feb 10th

‍Make plans to attend a lunch and learn event at The Depot and learn more about the Black history in Washington County.

 

The presentation will be provided by local attorney and historian, Drew Wright. The event will begin at 11:30am and conclude at 1:00pm.

‍Rotary Club of Salem Daddy/Daughter Dance - Feb 24th

‍The 9th Annual Daddy/Daughter dance is brought to you by the local Rotary Club and will be held at Cornerstone Hall.

 

Picture sessions begin at 5:00pm and the dance begins at 6:00pm.

‍33rd Annual Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival Begins - February 24th

 

The folks at LM Sugarbush will be celebrating their 33rd Annual Festival beginning on February 24th.

 

LM Sugarbush, LLC is a 140 acre farm located in Salem. Established in 1981 as Leane and Michael’s Sugarbush, the family owned operation is host to the annual Maple Syrup Festival.  

 

The farm produces around 1000 gallons of pure maple syrup every February and March for this festival and for distribution. This is one of the premier events in Washington County annually. 


Enjoy delicious pancakes and waffles, maple BBQ, wine and spirits, live music, tours of the farm, craft and food vendors as well as many activities and games.

 

S‍ome Special Events Coming in March - Mark Your Calendars

‍7th Annual Awareness Washington Co. Chili Cook-Off - March 9th

‍The Awareness Washington County Board of Directors announced that the 7th Annual Chili Cook Off will be held again this year on March 9 from 4:00- - 7:00pm at Southern Hills Church.


The popular community event will feature a variety of chilis, homemade dessert at auction, children’s activities, a silent auction and the always popular bag raffles.


Chaired by Marji Morris and assisted by AWC Board members Shawnda Keltner and Nicole Purlee, the cook off offers cash prizes for the judged best red chili, best judged white chili, best decorated booth and the People’s Choice winner.

‍Afternoon Tea and Dessert at the Stevens Memorial Museum - March 17th

‍Make plans to attend a special afternoon of tea and treats at the Steven's Memorial Museum. The event will explore their newest exhibit of historical clothing and quilts from the 19th and 20th centuries. Guest speaker Mary Figueroa, Curator of History at the Indiana State Museum, will give closer insight to the history of such garments and textiles.

‍Monon Mini-Convention and Yard Sale at The Depot - March 23rd

‍The Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society invites you to attend the third annual Monon mini convention at The Depot. 

 

The doors open at 9:00am and include presentations on Monon history, door prizes a yard sale and more. The yard sale will include HO models, back issues of The Hoosier Line magazine and much more. 

 

Make plans to attend this wonderful event about the legacy of The Monon Line.

‍Happy 140th Birthday Salem Lion

‍Every citizen who has lived in Washington County since the mid -1880's is familiar with the limestone statue of the lion on the northeast corner of the public square. Many of us retain vivid memories of this hand-carved, king of the jungle from our youth. And the lion continues to capture the attention and imagination of the county's children, generation after generation.

 

The lion statue was commissioned by Mr. Lee W. Sinclair for the State Bank of Salem, as a symbol of the bank's enduring service to the community. 

The Salem Lion will be celebrating his 140th birthday this year so be sure to wish him happy birthday as you walk by. 


‍Listen for Sandhill & Whooping Cranes Flying over Washington County during the month of February

Sandhill Cranes Migrating over Washington County

‍If you have spent much time outdoors in February and March in Washington County you have most likely heard a loud bird calls coming from high in the sky.

 

Most likely these are Sandhill Cranes on their migration back from their wintering grounds in Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.

 

Often times you can hear the calls of sandhill cranes long before you see them, and sometimes you may never even see them. Sandhill cranes can fly at altitudes exceeding 1-mile high and their calls can be heard from more than 2 miles away. 

 

‍‍Whooping Crane Migration through Indiana this Month

‍Whooping Cranes are large, bright white birds that move majestically through wetlands, grasslands and the occasional crop fields. Whooping Cranes are monogamous, meaning they choose a mate for life, and perform an elaborate courting dance as breeding pairs.

 

The Eastern Migration of Whoopers may come through Indiana this month from their wintering grounds in the Southeastern States on their way to Wisconsin and other northern areas.
